Spira Red, also known as Gracilaria (grass-il-AIR-ree-uh), is a natural red pigment from algae extract. It contains various bioactive compounds with potential health benefits. Seaweeds are a rich source of phytochemicals having antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, with a presence of fibers and minerals improving the mineral content. This particular seaweed is commonly cultivated for food as well as for the agar and carrageenan industries. Spira Red, as a fine powder, serves as a functional ingredient and pigment that opens up new prospects for food processing, including alternative meat product formulations. Spira Red contains high proportions of polysaccharides along with various other potentially beneficial compounds such as quality protein and essential fatty acids, particularly long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
